Brakeyard — scrap car collection, Huddersfield

What is a Certificate of Destruction, and why does it matter?

A Certificate of Destruction — a CoD — is the piece of paper that formally closes the book on your car. Without one, as far as the record is concerned, the vehicle is still yours.

Who can issue one

Only an Authorised Treatment Facility can issue a Certificate of Destruction. An ATF is a site licensed by the Environment Agency — or SEPA in Scotland, Natural Resources Wales, or DAERA in Northern Ireland — to depollute and dismantle end-of-life vehicles.

The certificate is filed electronically with DVLA, which updates its record to show the vehicle has been destroyed. You should receive your copy within a few days.

What it protects you from

Once the CoD is issued and DVLA notified, the vehicle stops being your problem. No more tax reminders, no insurance obligation, and no liability for anything done with it afterwards.

Without one, the vehicle stays registered to you. People discover this months later when a parking charge, a speeding notice or a fine for an untaxed vehicle arrives for a car they thought was long gone.

What to do at your end

Hand over the V5C when the car is collected, keep the yellow section for your records, and tell DVLA yourself that the vehicle has been scrapped. It takes a couple of minutes online and it means you are not relying solely on someone else's paperwork.

Quick answers

How long does the Certificate of Destruction take?

Normally within a few working days of collection. It is filed with DVLA electronically and a copy comes to you by email.

Do I still need to tell DVLA myself?

The ATF notifies DVLA, but telling them yourself as well costs nothing and gives you your own confirmation. We would recommend it.

This page is general information, not legal advice. For the official position, check GOV.UK — and if something about your car does not fit what is written here, ring the yard and ask.

Sat on your drive doing nothing?

Give us the registration. We'll tell you what it's worth and, if you're happy, have it gone tomorrow.
